How to Blog Like a Six-Figure Pro

Monday, October 13th, 2008 |

If you’re looking for advice on how to get started running a blog — and I mean a real blog here, not some hobby blog on Blogger.com — you are going to find a lot of bad information out there. Some of it will get you into trouble with Google, and some will guarantee that your blog fails in a spectacular fashion.

I’ve spoken to a lot of industry insiders, and the consensus is that there are two blogging programs that are head and shoulders above the rest, and will get you started on the road to success. The one I prefer is Blogging in Action, which is a full blueprint for starting and running a blog using all of the same techniques that the six-figure pros use.

There are two FREE books that you can download, too! The author of this book is pretty well-known in the industry as being a tell-it-like-it-is person, and he’s got a reputation for being very accurate and thorough, so it seems like a perfect way to learn how to create a blog.

My Thoughts on Blogging in Action

Friday, February 20th, 2009 |

Blogging in Action is the package that gets us the most excited. It’s rare you find a book that’s ‘not too hot, not too cold, but juuuust right.’ The author, Shaun Taylor, has certainly outdone himself — but what you really care about is how the book and resource can help you, so let’s get to it!

The thing you notice first when you start reading the ebook is that is it tips the scale at 258 pages! This is a huge accomplishment in the world of ebook publishing. Some people might be concerned that it’ll be too much information in too small a space, but the organization of it all makes that a non-issue.

Shaun starts out by outlining his goals for the book. He wants it to be current and up to date, covering different topics appealing to those of different levels of experience. He breaks down theory into action steps that create a roadmap for individuals who want to become a successful blogger. Two words — he succeeds.

As much as we like to give impartial reviews and tell you about the good and the bad — it’s really hard in this case. Even with a critcal viewpoint, there isn’t anything that screams out to be changed here. Sometimes we thought, “wait a minute, he should have…oh, he did!”

For those who are concerned about having to dig through a pile of information they already know or aren’t interested in, Shaun takes a unique approach to solving that problem. He not only has the standard table of contents, he also has ‘tags’ that indicate when you should and shouldn’t read. For example, if he includes non-essential information he marks it with a tag! For those who haven’t a lot of time to read this is a welcome addition.

Everything is covered here from A-Z, and it’s all explained so that anyone can grasp the concepts. The different sections in Blogging in Action generally start out with an overview of that particular section, but then they quickly move into action steps. This is great, because becoming a successful blogger isn’t just about reading the information, it’s about actually doing something with it. If this book doesn’t convince you to do that, nothing will!

The table of contents for things you’ll learn is too large to list, but here are some of our favorites:

  • Choosing a platform
  • What is a blog?
  • Configuring your blog for readers and search engines
  • Backing up your blog
  • What is a niche?
  • How to do keyword research (comes with a tool!)
  • Building your brand
  • Creating compelling content
  • Mistakes to avoid (this goes against what is taught in our least favorite blogging book)
  • Which directories to submit to
  • Article marketing
  • Finding .edu and .gov links!
  • Using social networking sites and strategy
  • Monetization strategies
  • Quick start videos for every step of the way

Clearly, Blogging in Action is the definitive guide for anyone who wants to get started with blogging. It is a very well designed, well edited ebook. It was created for readers of all skill levels. If you want to make sure you get the right book on how to blog and make money the first time, this is the one you should get.

Make Money Blogging with Fresh Content that keeps Users Interested

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008 |

For those who are hoping to make money blogging and are busy developing the web content to be featured on the blog, one of the most important things to keep in mind is simplicity in website development. Today, more and more internet visitors want to find good quality and dynamic web content that provides the information they are looking for, while keeping them engaged.

Dynamic content has proven to be one of the most important elements in not only getting targeted traffic to a website or blog, but also in encouraging them back to the site again and again. Webmasters across the board agree that it is much better to offer the things that web visitors want so that they come back rather than constantly trying to find new traffic. It is much easier to make money blogging when your blog attracts repeat visitors as most experts agree a site visitor often needs to see read your sales pitch around seven times before making a purchase.

At the same time that dynamic web content is very important to the visitors to a site, it is also fundamental to attracting the search engines and gaining a favorable placement in the search engine ranking pages, often called SERPs. These days, all of the search engines give a lot of weight to fresh content that is kept updated and to user-generated content, in addition to relevant information about the keyword used for the search.

Because of the above facts, having dynamic content throughout a site can weigh heavily in favor of a site that is diligently trying to make the most of search engine marketing. Good SEO (search engine optimization), combined with great web content that is regularly updated, is a powerful combination that can improve your potential to make money blogging dramatically.

Ranking high in the search engines for specific keywords that are directly related to the topic and purpose of a website is an essential internet marketing strategy and one of the simplest ways to assure a regular stream of visitors, without having to go to the cost of advertising your website. At the same time, once visitors arrive at a site that is filled with dynamic content that provides the kind of info they are after, they are more likely to bookmark the site, subscribe to your rss feed, or subscribe to your email auto responders that gives visitors access to additional free web content on the topic they are interested in.

One of the easiest methods of generating dynamic content that visitors enjoy and benefit from and that the search engines are attracted to is to provide a way for visitors to interact and add to the content. Allowing visitors to submit comments on your posts will encourage open debate between your visitors. This encourages them to return to check other comments plus the search engines love the fact that your pages are forever changing and growing with fresh dynamic web content.

WordPress is a popular blogging platform and it is a website development tool that can also be used as a dynamic web content type of management system. WordPress is free and easy to use, and it is widely used so there is a great deal of support, training and enhancements for the platform. With a WordPress blog even a person who has never built a website can quickly become a webmaster and start to make money blogging.

Bloggers Tips and Tricks For Creating a Profitable Blog

Sunday, December 28th, 2008 |

These days, it is fairly easy to set up a simple blog for personal use or even for a small business. There are an ever increasing number of tools and software programs available nowadays to help bloggers design their blogs and get them online in record time. In fact, most of these programs don’t even require a budding blogger to learn coding or programming in order to create a simple, yet attractive new blog.

The fact of the matter is that there isn’t even very much technical knowledge, skill or experience required these days to become a blogger and have your own successful money making blog once you have an internet marketing strategy in place. Most people with average skills can put together a simple 5 page blog in just a few hours of tinkering with a brand new piece of blog development software.

In the internet culture of today, putting up a new blog and getting it rolling is not much of a mystery anymore to most people. However, the thing that does trip up many bloggers and is most challenging to them is figuring out how to tell the world that their new site is actually “there.” Without visitors, no amount of work to make a site attractive will make any difference at all.

For people who are building a personal blog and who will send out an email to all their friends and family to view their new blog, this is probably not even a problem and they perhaps might even prefer that strangers don’t find it. But, the lack of blog traffic can be terribly vexing for bloggers who have worked hard, even if it was only a few hours, to put up a new site with some good web content in order to help promote their business or to try to start selling something online.

All too often, someone with plans to make money blogging will complete their new blog and then sit back and check their stats hourly, only to see that the only one visiting the site is the blogger himself, or the search engine spiders. However, if there is some activity from those spiders from the search engines, then at least there is hope of some traffic real soon.

One thing every blogger must learn to do is to utilize proper search engine optimization, or SEO techniques. This is the part that can be much more complex and time consuming to learn than the technical aspects of building a webpage and taking care of the blog hosting. SEO entails a number of things, in order to attract the attention of those search engine spiders and get them to index the site with a high ranking.

There are several blogs offering keyword tools and sound advice about blogging for money. Many of these resources go into great detail about how to do proper search engine optimization. With a little time, even a newbie can take the information they can find about SEO and apply it to their blog and eventually they will start to see their site climb in the rankings for certain keywords and phrases.

Identifying the primary keywords for a blog is one of the first steps in search engine optimization and bloggers must figure out what search terms, or keywords, people might use to find their site. At that point they can begin to make changes to the content and on-page elements. Then they will start to see traffic coming to their site and their blog statistics will improve.

Establish Expert Credibility with Blog Carnivals (Part 2)

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008 |

In the prior article in this series, I reviewed what blog carnivals are and why all up and coming bloggers should be participating in them. In the event that you missed that post, let me review briefly the advantages of participating in blog carnivals:

  • They improve your credibility
  • You immediately get regular, profitable readers of your partner blogs
  • You get a quick boost of traffic to blog articles
  • You get a longer term increase in search result rankings

What I’d like to review in this article is how you can get the most benefit out of your carnival participation. Let’s face it, carnivals require effort and time, so you should get as much benefit and good will from them as possible. Here’s how you can accomplish that:

1) Add your posts early. There will be a submission deadline, but in all likelihood the host already has some idea on how the post will be structured before the deadline, so you want your post available during this early stage.

2) Make the host’s job simple: Learn how to create blog post titles that are catchy, and brainstorm two or three powerful, compelling headlines that can be used for the anchor text in links. Good headings are hard to create, so create them on your own. You’ll save the host the trouble and get more visitors from a better heading.

3) Follow the entry guidelines.

4) Get organized: Organize the information you enter. Include your e-mail address, name, blog name, article title, post summary, several sample headings, permalink, and trackback URL. Place this information in an e-mail above the full article itself, unless otherwise directed.

5) Advertise: Once submitted, be sure to promote the carnival. What goes around comes around, and your collaborative efforts to generate traffic will payoff for everyone in the long run. That’s the point of these carnivals: all participants are sharing subscribers, giving each the opportunity to attract the others’ regular subscribers.

6) Make sure you can handle your traffic: Prepare your blog for any traffic spikes that might occur, and optimize the page that the carnival readers will be viewing. You’ll want to target the ads or offers to your audience, provide a very visible subscription link, and follow-up with at least one week’s worth of powerful posts to capitalize on any lingering traffic you might have.

Blog carnivals are an excellent way to bring profitable, relevant, qualified, long-term readers. Use them properly and you’ll reap the rewards. But you must be prepared to put your best foot forward. Pick up a good blogs how to if you have any doubts on how you can optimize your blog for this kind of traffic.

Good luck!

Why Up and Coming Bloggers Must Participate in Blog Carnivals (Part 1)

Sunday, November 30th, 2008 |

Let me just say that I’m a big believer of blog carnivals. Of course, they’re not without their disadvantages, but the advantages entirely outweigh the amount of effort and time that you give them.

That’s why it confounds me that blog carnivals aren’t more popular. Yes, the first few times that you participate in them, it will take you a little extra time to get used to how they work. And new carnival networks can sometimes be less reliable than one might like. But get hooked up with a good group of bloggers in your market, and carnivals are effective ways to:

  • Improve your authority
  • Immediately gain profitable, regular readers of your partner blogs
  • Get a quick surge of traffic to blog entries
  • Get a long term gain in search engine rankings

What is a Blog Carnival?

A blog carnival is a web event consisting of a loose partnership of bloggers writing about a predefined subject. The articles produced (or linked to) during a carnival usually resulting in a magazine-like format. The carnival has a theme, title, editors, writers, and consumers. Most carnivals are held on a regular basis with rotating hosts.

A carnival usually has an owner, who is the organizer of the overall carnival, deciding or collaborating on things like rules, frequency, how to blog in the carnival, editorial guidelines, and such. The owner also acts as the coordinator, determining the hosting schedule for the carnival.

Every carnival has one host, and the host’s blog is where all the blog articles for that particular carnival are located. In response to the call for submissions, every blogger participating in the carnival submits their post to the host, where it is reviewed, edited, and published in the host blog as one giant linkbait post or a series of posts. Obviously, you should know how to create blog posts that are effective and compelling to get the most benefit.

Carnivals usually draw loads of qualified traffic, so bloggers participating in the carnival receive a valuable one-way link from the host and the immediate traffic boost associated with the initial readers. The carnival host gets links from each of the member bloggers who have partnered together to advertise the event, knowing that the better the carnival is, the better the links will be when it comes time for them to host.

Now that you know what a carnival is, we’ll review how you can get the most out of your carnival participation . . . in our next post!

What Platform is Best for your Blog?

Saturday, November 29th, 2008 |

I can’t think of a more common concern or question among both beginning and experienced bloggers alike: which blogging platform should I use? Aside from learning how to blog, it’s an almost universal concern.

And there is no simple answer. All bloggers MUST own their URLs, but choice of the platform is mainly dependent on the indivudal blogger’s needs. That said, I’ve compiled a list of advantages and disadvantages of the two main platform choices below.

Hosted Platforms

Hosted platforms refer to services whereby a service provider grants you access to their software, network connection, and hardware, and you register a blogging account for use on that platform. With a hosted blog, you have access to an administrative panel for your blog, and that’s it.

Popular hosted platforms include packages like Blogger, TypePad, and LiveJournal.

Advantages of Hosted Platforms

  • Cheap: many are free; others (like TypePad) are offered with multiple price points
  • Simple to get started: just signup for an account and then quickly  learn how to create blog posts
  • Automatic updates: you don’t have to concern yourself with keeping hosted software patched and updated.

Disadvantages of Hosted Platforms

  • Rigid: there are fewer configuration options with hosted platforms.
  • Not as many design choices: you typically only get to choose from a limited number of standard designs, and you often can’t make updates to them
  • Generic URL: some hosted platforms don’t offer the choice to use your own URL
  • Less control: you are at the mercy of the platform
  • Migration issues: migrating from some free hosted platforms results in a lot of effort and often the temporary loss of search engine rankings

Self-hosted Platforms

Self-hosted platforms consist of a web hosting account you establish with a data center, and the blogging software you install on the host’s server. With a self-hosted blog, you have access to a management panel for your blog, but you also have access to a server account and the blog software where you can do nigh anything.

Common self-hosted software includes Movable Type, Drupal, and WordPress.

Advantages of Self-hosted Platforms

  • Design flexibility: you have complete control over design and layout
  • Great software: the best software exists on self-hosted platforms
  • Custom URL: custom URL’s are common on self-hosted platforms
  • Adaptability: you can change your blog as your needs change
  • Easy migration: should you ever want to move to a different platform or another server, migrating is a snap

Disadvantages of Self-hosted Platforms

  • Difficult setup: setup can sometimes be difficult, but this can be overcome with a good blogs how to
  • Cost: while the blogging software is free, the hosting platform will cost you money
  • Hosting issues: unless you choose a good host, you might have to suffer from down-time or poor support
  • Upgrades: you will need to keep your software patched

Most of of my blogs are self-hosted, and it’s what I usually advise anyone looking to create a professional presence. There are too many benefits to pass up, and you usually have the option to host many blogs and domains on one account, driving the cost per blog down to a small amount.
